Giftedness and Depression

People tend to think that being gifted is the most wonderful thing in the world. They say, “You’re smart, you do well in school, you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips. What more could you want?”

Those kinds of things are very easy to say from the outside. But when you step on the inside there’s another whole side to giftedness that most people don’t know about. The side that comes out when you’re all alone, or when your sensitivities are running at full throttle.

I have tears in my eyes right now and I am (almost) speechless after reading this article; Existential Depression in Gifted Individuals.

I’ve heard of the word ‘existential’ but didn’t know what it meant. I had no idea it was its own category of depression! A million lightbulbs went off reading this piece and I have much to think about now.
