I have not seen the "Last Lecture" video, but this is what my last lecture would include:

1. Be independent first. Even.if you're lucky enough to have people in your life, you will always need to be responsible for yourself. People will always come & go.

2. Be yourself, always. This will make you unpopular, but popular people really aren't "there" to begin with

3. Don't feel bad if your work is more gratifying than relationships. Notice I didn't use the word "job". Work can be a hobby, an art, a talent or skill you pursue just because you love it & somehow it loves you back.

4. Don't be guilted into "giving back" if you'd really rather not.
