What should one do if you believe you are gifted and your parents just laugh at the idea?

That's a tough situation to be in.  Of all people in the world, we tend to want our parents' love, approval and acceptance more than others.  They are our parents after all.

Sometimes parents reject ideas, not because they don't believe them, but because they don't know what to do about them.  Being gifted may have meaning to your parents that you aren't aware of.

- Maybe for them it means that they think you should be doing amazing things that you haven't yet done and therefore they have been 'bad parents'.

- Maybe they don't know the less obvious side of giftedness – the social and emotional challenges – and therefore have attributed certain parts of your life to other factors.

- Maybe they learned something about giftedness once that they don't like and therefore would not prefer to deal with.

- And maybe they just haven't a clue as to what to do now so it's easier to reject your giftedness than to try to figure out what to do next.

- And maybe it isn't any of these things. :)

In any case, it's up to you to do the best you can for yourself.  Learn about giftedness in general, and how elements of it apply to you in your life.  Discover everything you can, and work toward being your very best, even if other people don't always understand.  Some of them will 'come around' later on, and some never will, but at least you won't have wasted your talent and ability in the mean time.
